Packaging re-use in Mexico

Re-using packaging at the ASSA ABLOY Phillips plant in Mexico has reduced waste disposal of cartons by 25 percent – significantly contributing to a reduction in environmental impact.

At ASSA ABLOY Mexico, the total quantity of packaging waste being disposed of as garbage has increased as the result of additional outsourcing. In order to be more sustainable, the challenge was to find solutions where that additional packaging could be reused to replace or reinforce needed packaging of other products for customers.

The Phillips plant in Mexico City prides itself on always looking for continuous improvement ideas. It has an employee culture that looks for savings to minimize or avoid environmental impact; seeking to reduce, reuse, recycle and replace where possible. It was here that an initiative was implemented to reuse packaging. Its re-use of reinforced packaging has been implemented in the packaging of rim locks and has helped avoid returned goods claims due to damage.

The amount of incoming cartons disposed as garbage for the Rim lock model 3055 has been now been reduced by about 25 percent. This kind of activity reinforces the company’s commitment to reducing its environmental impact and continuous improvement.
